About Harpers on the Beach

Luxury accommodation close to Port Arthur historic site

Harpers on the Beach offers luxury beachfront bed and breakfast accommodation, consisting of three luxuriously-appointed queen rooms, a two bedroom self-contained cottage and a luxury self-contained studio. The rooms are beautifully decorated with imported fabrics and furniture and each has a private deck with views of the ocean. Step off your deck and it is a mere 25 paces to the usually deserted three kilometre white sand beach that Tasmania is famous for. Wild, unspoiled and virtually secret the crescent-shaped White Beach has been named as one of the most beautiful beaches in Australia. Facing west, you will experience stunning sunsets over Storm Bay with views all the way to Bruny Island, the South West wilderness area and the Hartz Mountains.

Just 10 minutes from Port Arthur, Harpers on the Beach is the only boutique B&B in Tasmania that can claim to be ON the beach!

Dinner is served by arrangement and, whenever possible, is based around local and organic produce from our vegetable gardens. We are proud to feature Bream Creek Wines, our local award winning 5 star vineyard. Your hosts, Jonathan and Jill Mills, strive to present an environment that is peaceful and relaxing and to deliver the highest form of service, while at the same time creating a warm and hospitable atmosphere.

Jonathan and Jill Mills

Jill is originally from Auchterarder in Scotland, Jonathan was born in London, England. Like many people, they stumbled across Tasmania on holiday when they were living in Queensland, fell in love with the state and moved there as soon as was humanly possible. They opened Storm Bay Guest House in 2005. In 2007 they had the good fortune to find Harpers Place right on beautiful White Beach and spent the next 2 years purpose building Harpers to exacting specifications for a full service luxury beach front accommodation with individual queen en-suite rooms, a 2 bedroom cottage and a self-contained studio. Harpers on the Beach was opened in July 2009.

Jill, although having a geography degree from Aberdeen University and spent many years in the IT industry, learned at a young age the 'art' of cooking. This was complimented during a three year odyssey travelling around the world, looking for a place to live and start a business. Jill and Jonathan stayed at a variety of hotels, B&B, farm stays etc but the ones they most enjoyed were the small French and Italian family-run hotels. This was an eye opener to local and regional cuisine and the environment in which it was served, two key ingredients that are often omitted from restaurants and hotels.

The 'home cooked meal', prepared and served for a small number of people, will always have a certain feel to it that restaurant food can never replicate. Jill collected recipes along the way, spent time in Italian kitchens, learnt how to make pasta, pizza and everything in between. She is currently working on a cook book entitled 'For the Love of It'.

Jonathan doesn't have a degree in anything, but can boast a litany of jobs and a multitude of different 'professions' including owning his own film production company, a baccarat dealer in Atlantic City, journalist, photographer, carpenter, horticulturist and published author. His latest novel, 'Butternut', is published by 40 South.

If you look out of the window at Harpers, you'll know why they live on White Beach, one of the few remaining unspoilt places on this amazing and threatened planet. There is something very, very special about White Beach and the Tasman Peninsula. Just magic.

Dining

Luxurious Accomodation

Dinner, by arrangement

Dinner is served by arrangement and, wherever possible, is based around local and organic produce, either from our own organic gardens or from Storm Bay, where we catch salmon, tuna, flathead, trumpeter and the world-famous rock lobster crayfish). There is nothing quite like homemade cooking, especially when the chef is also the owner of the establishment! Jill has even cooked for the Premier of Tasmania - and constantly for Jonathan, a food critic of the highest calibre! Dinner is a set 3 course menu, which changes daily. Cost is $49 per person. We have a good range of Tasmanian wines featuring the award winning Bream Creek wines, our local vineyard. As we are licenced, we don’t do BYO with dinner.
